REAL-LIFE EXAMPLE: BARCELONA
‘Barcelona for You’ or BCN4U is a mobile app for people who visit Barcelona. Based on SAP City Connect, BCN4U can not only help tourists find the best things to do in Barcelona – tailored to their preferences –, but it can, for example, also tell how long the queue is at a given tourist attraction, in realtime.
Moreover, through Internet of Things (IoT) technology (incl. `beacons’) the app provides location-based services, like coupons and special offers for shops, restaurants, etc. in the current vicinity of the user.
REAL-LIFE EXAMPLE: CODELCO
Copper mining company Codelco is shifting from the traditional to a real-time mining model, with highly automated processes and remotely controlled machines. Its four mines in Chile are all operated automatically: trucks drive themselves, operations are controlled remotely, information is shared in realtime, etc.
REAL-LIFE EXAMPLE: PORT OF HAMBURG
Port of Hamburg has substantially optimized the flow of goods, minimized traffic jams and reduced waiting times for drivers, thanks to an innovative, connected logistics solution that closely connects the business networks of port-based companies, partners and customers. The system helped the company raise its handling capacity by an impressive 187%.
REAL-LIFE EXAMPLE: UPS
UPS acquired a large 3D printing operation. Instead of moving goods, UPS plans on using digital product information to accelerate the manufacturing and delivery of critical machinery spare parts. UPS is not waiting to be disrupted, it is leading the change.
REAL-LIFE EXAMPLE: WEISSBEERGER
Weissbeerger leveraged hard- and software, realtime data and IoT to develop ‘the connected bar’ – a smart solution that provides breweries and bars with a real-time understanding of the market in order to optimize pricing, manage inventory, and, most importantly, create a one-of-a-kind experience for consumers. Sensors connected directly to the beer tap provide useful details, such as sellout volume, beer quality metrics and more.
